Integrative Medicine For Cancer Patients: What You Should Know

Posted on

When you find yourself facing a battle with cancer, you may not know which treatment approach you want to take. Many people are not even aware of all of the various options available to them for treatment when they are diagnosed with cancer. Integrative medicine is a little-known but highly effective approach to treating all forms of cancer that combines alternative medicine and conventional medicine to provide holistic treatment for the cancer-ridden mind and body. All you need to do is know some of the treatments available to you so that you can take an integrative approach to your cancer treatments.

Immunotherapy

One conventional medical treatment that many cancer patients have never heard of is the relatively new idea of immunotherapy. Immunotherapy works to actually stimulate your own immune system to attack cancer cells.

This could mean little to no chemotherapy or radiation treatments that are hard on your body and overall sense of well-being. This type of biological therapy works with your body to fight cancer rather than against it.

While using immunotherapy does not guarantee that chemo or radiation will not be used, it is a viable and increasingly useful conventional treatment option for some types of cancer.

Acupuncture

Turning to alternative medicine, acupuncture is a useful and viable treatment option to help you to treat your cancer and related symptoms. This ancient Chinese treatment stems from the belief that the human body operates based on the flow of energy throughout the body.

When the flow of energy is disrupted or blocked, the body suffers. In the case of cancer, your conventional medical treatments may leave you feeling fatigued, nauseated, and otherwise under the weather (not to mention the cancer itself), leaving your energy unbalanced and weak.

Acupuncture attempted to fix such issues through the insertion of tiny needles into specific acupuncture points throughout the body. The needles stimulate energy flow and remove blockages to help treat your cancer-related symptoms and help the body to heal itself.

Art and Other Creative Therapies

Your body is not the only thing that suffers the ill-effects of cancer and conventional treatments. Your mind also suffers a great deal.

When you are in poor spirits, you may not respond as well to treatments and could suffer from depression on top of everything else.

Creative therapies such as art therapy, creative writing, or music can help to focus your mind on something other than your fight with cancer. Creative endeavors provide you with an outlet for your emotions as well as a helpful distraction when undergoing extensive conventional cancer treatments.

As you can see, integrative medicine takes all aspects of your health and being into consideration. Conventional medical treatments fight off the cancer, alternative therapies treat the symptoms and help your body to heal itself, and other treatments and endeavors help your mental and emotional health throughout the process. All you need to do is give integrative treatment methods a try to make your battle with cancer more holistic.
