3 Tips For Combating The Seasonal Flu

Posted on

Getting the seasonal flu can be miserable. The flu this year has been especially bad and has afflicted even those who have gotten a flu shot. This is because the actual strand that they used to develop the flu shot has mutated. That is why it is important to know what to do if you get the flu. Here are some things that you can do to kick the flu faster.

1. Drink, Drink, Drink

One of the best things to do when you have a virus is to drink lots of water. Because a virus cannot be treated with an antibiotic you simply have to wait for it to pass. This is why it is important that you flush as much water as you can through your system.

One of the negative side effects of a fever is dehydration. The flu generally causes a fever. In addition, you might have a runny nose, which means you will be losing fluids there as well. This is why it is important that you replenish your fluids. If you are dehydrated you are less likely to have optimal immune system functioning. This is why you should drink as much water as you can, even if you don't feel thirsty.

2. Get A Light Massage

Light massage can help to boost your lymphatic system. Your lymphatic system is incredibly important when you are sick because it helps to transfer antibodies throughout your body. By having someone put light pressure on your back, arms, legs, hands or feet you are telling your body to get more of the fluid in your body circulating. If your lymphatic system isn't working properly, the fluid will stay stagnant, which will cause you to stay sick longer.

If you cannot afford to get a professional massage, ask a trusted friend or family member to rub your back or limbs. You can also do it yourself.

3. Sweat It Out

Another great way to combat the flu is to sweat it out. If you do not have access to a sauna, a hot shower will work. Just shut the door to the bathroom and let the water run. The steam will help to clear your sinuses and it will help you to sweat out all the toxins in your body and flush out the illness.

If you do sweat a lot, make sure you replenish your fluids. Sweating without replacing the water could be dangerous.

By doing these simple things, you can fight the flu faster. (For more information on family docotors, contact Thiele Kim DO PC)
